Apple scoops half-a-billion dollar profit

Apple narrowly failed to hit the one million mark for laptop sales, despite shifting a record number of Macs in the last financial quarter. Sales of 986,000 MacBooks plus 624,000 desktop Macs underpinned revenues of $4.8 billion and a $546 million profit, increases of 31 per cent and 27 per cent respectively on the same quarter last year. ...more

BenQ claims wide-screen LCD speed record

BenQ has unveiled what it describes as the world's fastest 20-inch wide-screen LCD monitor. The FP202W has a response time of 8ms making it suitable for the demanding graphics of gaming or movie viewing. Mozilla seeks Web designer

The Mozilla Organisation is seeking a designer or designers to create a new logo and website for its upcoming Mozillion campaign. The campaign will attempt to raise $1mn via online contributions to help ensure that the organisation - responsible for the Mozilla, Firefox and Camino browsers, the Thunderbird email client and several other projects - can continue. Government Gateway closed to Mac and Linux users

Tony Blair's target of putting all government services online by 2005 has run into intense criticism this week, as news emerged that access to many of Government Gateway services is restricted to users of Windows and Internet Explorer. Although Government Gateway currently offers only limited services, it will eventually provide the means by which all paperwork sent to government departments will be superseded by online forms. Investigations by Linuxuser magazine found that accessing the sites with other browsers proved unreliable and that attempting to use any of the secure services proved impossible. ...more
