Microsoft meets EU deadline for server documentation

Microsoft has met today's deadline for the submission of revised documentation on server interoperability, the European Commission has confirmed. Potential licensees of the server technology detailed will now evaluate whether the latest documentation contains the necessary information to allow the development of work group server operating system products that are fully interoperable with Microsoft software. The independent Monitoring Trustee, Professor Neil Barrett will also test the documentation in order to verify its accuracy and the commission will decide in due course whether or not Microsoft is in compliance with the requirements of the EU's March 2004 Decision: : that it provides complete and accurate technical documentation on server interface information and make that information available to licensees at a reasonable and non-discriminatory price. ...more

Spam levels dropping by a third - security company

Email security company SoftScan claims spam levels dropped an unprecedented 30 per cent in the last week. The reason behind the drop could be because one of the main botnets used for sending out spam email might have temporarily lost control of the infected machines in its network. Other possibilities include the effect of earthquakes in Asia or the fact that more PCs would have been turned off over the Christmas break or replaced with new models. ...more

Russian computers may be susceptible to a new virus concealed in bitmap images

The virus is a Trojan - named Agent - that infects computers running the Russian edition of Windows 2000 with IE 5 and 5.5 when the victim clicks on a bitmap image attached in an email. Microsoft has yet to issue a patch for the flaw in the handling of bitmap images, according to Kaspersky - a Russian antivirus company - and it has been exploited as a direct result of the leak of part of the Windows source code. ...more
