BBC to give free access to archive footage

The BBC will make more than 100 hours of factual content available to download as the first stage in its Creative Archive plans. This first phase, beginning in autumn 2004, will comprise 2,000 clips of up to three minutes in length, which non-commercial organisations and individuals (such as schools, teachers and pupils) will be able to freely download, edit and share. US Govt says info request 'would crash computers'

The Bush administration is refusing to agree to a request to hand over information recording activities of foreign lobbyists to a journalist. A somewhat red-faced Department of Justice wrote back to say that copying the database would crash the system. In a letter to the Centre for Public Integrity, which made the request, Thomas McIntyre of the Justice Department which handles such requests wrote that because the department had 'experienced substantial problems with the current system, implementing such a request risks a crash that cannot be fixed and could result in a major loss of data, which would be devastating. ...more

Online advertising provides boost for Yahoo!

Yahoo!, long since seen as a bellwether stock for the Internet sector, has reported stunning results for its financial fourth quarter, far in advance of analysts predictions. Revenues increased by a whopping 62 per cent largely due to huge jumps from non-US sales.
