BT CEO to go

BT will be looking for a new chief executive, come January 2002. Sir Peter Bonfield will be officially standing down early from the BT Group, but - somewhat to the ire of shareholders - he will be taking handsome compensation with him. While his six-year tenure has overseen a drop in BT's share value from ?14 (at its peak) to nearer ?3, his leaving benefits comprise one year's worth of salary (?820,000) one year's 'on-target bonus' (?615,000) and a number of other benefits, such as a company car (?50,000). ...more

Campaigners question Jobs' call to drop DRM

A leading group of anti-DRM campaigners has called on Apple CEO Steve Jobs to back with action his recent call for the scrapping of copy protection on music downloads. DefectiveByDesign, which regularly arranges pickets outside Apple retail stores, said that Jobs' widely reported and widely critiqued call for record companies to abandon their insistence on DRM increasingly looks more like an attempt to deflect criticism of Apple than a serious commitment to eliminating usage restrictions, such as the FairPlay technology it uses in the iTunes Store. 'To many observers your blog pledge looks like a way to reduce pressure on Apple from regulators, and head off calls from the industry to license FairPlay to other distributors,' DefectiveByDesign says in an open letter to the Apple CEO. ...more

PC Pro tests the brand new ATi graphics chips

ATi has announced the RADEON 9800, 9600 and 9200 chips, with the former two supporting the latest versions of the DirectX and OpenGL graphics standards. The top drawer chip is the 9800, upon which the likes of Hercules is basing its 3D Prophet 9800 Pro card.
