SuSE delighted big bro HP helping Linux fend off SCO

SuSE happy at HP indemnities, but feels no pressure to offer same HP's action yesterday to offer its Linux customers indemnification against any legal action from SCO has made SuSE, one of the Linux vendors used by HP, very happy. McAfee falls foul of faulty virus detection update

Security firm McAfee has a great deal of egg on its face after it inadvertently released a new set of virus signature files that falsely identified dozens of ordinary programs as malware. The company now has to face complaints from angry users who may have deleted their files. Government restricts RIPA snoopers

The Government has rethought its unpopular addendum to the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), adding only five new bodies to the list of those with access to your data. Under the Act, ISPs and network operators are to keep records of data traffic for up to a year that the police, intelligence services, Inland Revenue and customs and excise can make requests to access. In June of last year, the Government proposed adding an Order to this that would add around 600 bodies - including the likes of the Food Standards Agency and the Post Office - to those with access, but backed down after a public outcry. ...more

Pioneer announces eight-speed DVD writer

Pioneer has announced a new internal DVD/CD writer, the first to provide a maximum 8x DVD burning for both -R and +R media. Eight-speed recording will be possible with both the new high-speed DVD-R discs, the standard for which is in the process of being ratified by the DVD Forum, and the recently ratified DVD+R media.
