Microsoft announces new Xbox deal

With the release date being moved back and the lack of Japanese developers getting behind the new Microsoft mega-console, the company has announced a new series of deals with software developers. Yesterday, Microsoft announced that it has signed deals with six developers who are putting games together for the Xbox. Microsoft will publish games developed by Blitz Games, Curly Monsters, Double Fine Productions, Radical Entertainment, Vision Scape Interactive and Yeti Software. ...more

Old media takes last stand against 'the Googles of the world'

Leading media executives took a combative tone against Internet companies on Tuesday, suggesting that Big Media increasingly considers new content distributors like Google to be more foe than friend. At a panel discussion on the second day of the 56th annual National Cable & Telecommunications Association conference, top executives said talk of the demise of traditional media in the digital age was overblown. While new distribution technologies like the Internet and mobile phones are siphoning television audiences, media companies argued that the Web also brings new revenue streams. ...more

Netscape sets a course for Navigator

Netscape has announced that the next version of its eponymous Web browser will be known as Netscape Navigator 9, reviving a name that has not been used since the last century. Early releases of the browser, versions 1 to 3, carried the Navigator moniker, but version 4 was renamed Netscape Communicator to reflect the fact that the Web browser was just one component of the software that also provided email and instant messaging. By the time version 6 was released in 2000 - there was no version 5 - the name had been simplified to Netscape as responsibility for the development of the software was handed first to Mozilla and then to Mercurial Communications by its owner, AOL. ...more

Vodafone has flicked the switch for the start of its 'Vodafone live! With 3G' service. Its portal of mobile services has had a 3G makeover for UMTS-based (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) video calls and messages, music downloads, games and also 'mobile TV' for streaming clips to your handset.
