DoJ abandons call for Microsoft breakup

New administration favours rapid resolution. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has declared that it will no longer seek the breaking up of Microsoft, in the anti-trust case. Torvalds tells Microsoft: put up or shut up

Linux lead developer, Linus Torvalds, has told Microsoft to name the 235 patents the company claims are infringed by free and open-source software (FOSS). Torvalds claims the time has come for Microsoft to put up or shut up. 'Naming them would make it either clear that Linux isn't infringing at all (which is quite possible, especially if the patents are bad), or would make it possible to avoid infringing by coding around whatever silly thing they claim,' he says in an interview with Information Week. ...more

Firefox 2 goes public

The Mozilla Corporation has announced the release of Firefox 2, introducing anti-phishing protection, improved built-in search tools, changes to tabbed browsing, the ability to restore an interrupted session, better support for Web feeds, a spelling check and support for dynamic bookmark titles. The updated default theme refines the look of the buttons and other visual elements, attaching the Go button to the Location Bar and adding an equivalent button to the Search Bar.
