Microsoft accepts new name for Windows minus Media Player

Microsoft has accepted the European Commission's name for its forthcoming version of Windows XP without Windows Media Player. The EC ruled last week that both the Home and Pro version should be appended with N to designate the absence of Media Player; they will therefore be known as Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional Edition N. Microsoft had originally suggested calling the software Windows XP Reduced Media Edition, but that was rejected by the EC as too pejorative. ...more

Yahoo messenger hits security flaw

Danish security firm Secunia has warned of a flaw in Yahoo!'s Messenger service. The problem occurs in an ActiveX component and could allow an attacker to run executable code on the target system. AMD warns of poor results

AMD is the latest technology firm to warn of worse-than-expected results in what is turning out to be a nightmare summer for the industry. USPTO frowns on dynamic web patents

The USPTO has upheld the Public Patent Foundation's requests for a formal review of the 'dynamic web' patents owned by EpicRealm, which have been used as the basis for infringement proceedings against tens of companies. PUBPAT put forward bodies of prior art that the USPTO had not previously been aware of when the patents were initially granted in an attempt to invalidate the patents. If the prior art is found to invalidate the patents they will be revoked and EpicRealm will find it difficult to sustain related lawsuits - tough times for a company that thrives solely on its patent portfolio. ...more
