Apple delays Leopard release until October

Apple has announced that Mac OS X 10.5 will not be released, as previously expected, in June, but has been delayed until October. In a statement the company explained that in order to meet its June deadline for the release of the iPhone, many development resources that would otherwise have been deployed on Leopard have instead been deployed on the widescreen iPod-phone-Internet communicator. ...more

4GB DDR memory sticks in volume production

Samsung says its 1Gbit DDR memory is the first to receive Intel endorsement and is already in mass production in DIMMs of up to 4GB in capacity. The 4GB registered DIMMs will be produced for high-end machines - servers, workstations and so on - but even the humble desktop will see 2GB sticks, of the unbuffered variety, and SODIMMs for notebooks will also be produced to this capacity. Quark drops single-user restriction

QuarkXPress 6 users can now install their copy on two machines, as the company has dropped its much-criticised restriction. The new policy permits non-concurrent use of the software on two systems running the same platform. Designers have until now have had to own two copies if they wish to transfer work between a desktop and notebook machine, for instance. ...more

Sober virus on popular European tour

The Sober virus - discovered on Monday - now accounts for 50 per cent of reported incidents, warns Sophos, and is continuing its rise throughout the UK and Germany. Carole Theriault, security consultant at Sophos, said that on Monday, Sober reports accounted for 20 per cent, but that level has now reached 50 per cent. 'It's a fairly obvious worm,' she said, but she had an idea why the virus was still spreading. ...more
