YouTube trounces rivals for web video

YouTube, the surprise leader in Internet video, is now serving more than 100 million clips every day, figures that must make Google cringe. The search giant has made much of its video offering, which launched in Europe just last week, but it is the upstart startup that has, like Flickr for photos and MySpace for music, become the place for uploading, searching and viewing fuzzy and grainy videos. YouTube now claims to account for 60 per cent of all videos watched on the Web and founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen are now turning their attention to making some money from the site, primarily through advertising, though like both MySpace - now owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp - and Yahoo!'s Flickr, its destiny would seem to lie in a takeover. ...more

Sony shows seven Cyber-shots

MP3.com to appeal against Universal ruling

MP3.com intends to appeal against the US court ruling finding it guilty of breach of copyright law. The site has already made deals with Sony, EMI, BMG and Warner to pay for the tracks it uses on the site, but last week a court ruled it would have to pay $25,000 (17,835 GBP) for every CD belonging to Universal Music Group. ...more

Budgens gives up on Net shopping

UK supermarket chain Budgens will shut down its online service on Monday. The retailer, which has stores throughout the South and Midlands, found that there wasn’t sufficient customer interest to justify a Net service. Budgens will instead concentrate on serving the local community through its own stores and through supplying goods to local retailers who will trade under the name Budgens Local. ...more

SCO's Linux claims cast in fresh doubt

SCO's Linux licensing efforts look set to go up in smoke, as a revelatory email that claims 'no evidence of any copyright infringement' was found in a 1999 comparison of UNIX and Linux code. SCO's suit against IBM now includes $3bn of copyright damage, but this is put down to IBM's continuing its AIX business, subsequent to SCO pulling IBM's Unix licence. What the email does appear to destroy is SCO's campaign against Linux, claiming that the operating system contains Unix copyright code, and its efforts to extract licence fees from Linux users in respect of continued use of this code. ...more
