Microsoft has thrown its weight behind 64-bit computing with the official announcement of new versions of Windows. At WinHEC 2005 (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference) Redmond has unveiled Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Real song give-away for Rhapsody relaunch

RealNetworks is to give 25 free songs each month to users of its Rhapsody music store as part of a three-tier relaunch. As well as Rhapsody 25 - the basic downloads service that includes the free songs - there is an enhanced Rhapsody Unlimited, which lets subscribers download as many tracks as they wish, and Rhapsody To Go, which lets them transfer those songs to a limited selection of Windows Media-compatible portable players. Apple scoops half-a-billion dollar profit

Apple narrowly failed to hit the one million mark for laptop sales, despite shifting a record number of Macs in the last financial quarter. Sales of 986,000 MacBooks plus 624,000 desktop Macs underpinned revenues of $4.8 billion and a $546 million profit, increases of 31 per cent and 27 per cent respectively on the same quarter last year. ...more

SanDisk develops T-Flash removable, intelligent mini-storage

A new fingernail sized flash memory format has been introduced that will make removable storage possible in much smaller devices than at present, including mobile phones. SanDisk has developed the T-Flash, which at 11x15x1mm is a quarter of the size of the smallest flash memory cards currently available and compatible, via an adapter, with any SD card reading device. Being removable will make it ideal for transferring data such as phone numbers and settings from one phone to another, SanDisk says. ...more
