Microsoft has won its battle with the US Patents and Trademarks Office (USPTO) over its attempt to patent the File Allocation Table or FAT, which formed the basis of the management of disk storage in the days of MS-DOS. The company applied for a patent on FAT in 1996. However, because the format had become so widely used, there were fears that Microsoft would use the FAT licence to drive out competition. ...more

UK security experts are warning wireless users to be on the lookout for 'evil twins' when connecting to the Internet in public spaces such as train stations or cafes. Using hotspots is a risky business, say wireless internet and cyber crime experts at Cranfield University, as most of us ask no more than that the hotspot connection is successfully made. Munich gets cold feet over Linux switch

The City of Munich is stepping back from its planned Linux switch, citing potential legal and financial dangers posed by software patents.
