Munich gets cold feet over Linux switch

The City of Munich is stepping back from its planned Linux switch, citing potential legal and financial dangers posed by software patents. HP employs Edgeline for enterprise inkjet printing

HP has introduced a new range of enterprise printers and multi-function printing devices that use its new Edgeline high-speed inkjet printing system. The new range, comprised of the CM8060 and CM8050 colour devices, are the first examples of mainstream printers and multi-function printing devices available in Europe to use the Edgeline print head. Edgeline was announced in October 2006 and uses a revised print head that is the full width of the printed page, rather than a character-wide head that scans along the page in the same way that dot-matrix or golf ball print head technology operated. ...more

Internet behind rise in ID theft

The World Wide Web is not a totally safe environment, what with malicious viruses and some of the more dubious virtual inhabitants, but now the US government has revealed a new threat. It seems that not even our identities are safe anymore and a new report from the US Treasury Department reveals that ID theft is steadily on the increase with 617 cases reported in 2000, almost double that of 267 in the previous year. Some of the main incidents in the US involved social security theft, where someone acquires another person's social security number from the database via the Internet, while other incidents of ID theft have resulted from the stealing of personal items. ...more

Taipei aims to be world's first fully Wi-Fi city

Taipei is set to win the race to become the world's first fully Wi-Fi connected city. The wireless network planned by the city's government will provide 90 per cent coverage for its 3 million inhabitants and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2005. The capital of Taiwan, and the powerhouse for the country's high-tech industries, will enjoy up to 20,000 access points around the city, reports Reuters. ...more
