16 million online in the UK

The latest Which? Online report reveals that 16 million people in the UK are now online and the gap between men and women surfers has now closed. The report shows that there's been a 9 per cent increase in Internet surfers on last year's figures, with 36 per cent of the British public now online and 45 per cent of those logged on being women. The survey also shows that users are spending at least five hours a week surfing for their favourites sites, with 12 being the average number of sites visited per week. ...more

Computer Misuse Act crumbles as DoS attacker walks free

The venerable Computer Misuse Act (CMA) crumbled on Tuesday as a teenager accused of sending millions of emails to a former employer walked free. District Judge Kenneth Grant of Wimbledon Magistrates Court ruled that the sending of some five million emails in order to take down an email server did not constitute unauthorised access or modification of computer systems, with which he was charged. The Judge concluded that this set the precedent that Denial Of Service attacks of this nature did not contravene the CMA, which, now 15 years old, was never concieved to deal with this type of threat. ...more
