Microsoft releases toolkit for controlling access to XP SP2

As part of the distribution of Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft has released a set of tools for enterprise customers to control access to the new update. Essentially, it provides a way for corporate customers to retain access to automatic updates - for security patches, for example - while controlling rollout of the service pack. While the important security update to Windows XP has yet to be featured on the Microsoft's Automatic Update system, those who have already been trialling SP 2 - and are thus first in the queue for the code - are being given options to delay its distribution. ...more

MuVo moves up

Creative is making a 128Mb version of its lightweight MP3 player available in the UK. It should be on shop shelves in a couple of weeks. Previously, the MuVo - aimed at those listening music on the move - was only available with 64Mb of memory. ...more

Tesco buys into American market

The UK's largest grocer, Tesco, is capitalising on the success of its UK Internet operation and has decided to invest in a US online shopping site and open up the world's largest home shopping market. The company has said that it will pay over ?16 million for a stake in GroceryWorks, the US online operation of Safeway (an American store that shares a name with the UK grocer), and for the money Tesco will get a stake of 35 per cent in GroceryWorks, as well getting access to technical resources and intellectual property from the group. Meanwhile, Safeway will still keep a 50 per cent share in the business, with the rest of the figure being met by other shareholders and private investors. ...more

Sony's profits-drop beats expectations

Sony has announced its third-quarter results and has halved its profit estimate for the full year to $423m. Analysts predicted profits to fall by as much as 27 per cent, but the picture was a touch rosier, with a $1.24bn operating profit for the quarter ending 31 December, down 11 per cent. ...more

London Underground Web service helps mind the gap

Designed to make tube travel easier, London Underground has launched a new interactive accessibility service, detailing routes between platforms and street level Launched yesterday at Southwark station, the online service is currently only available via the Direct Enquiries website, which offers similar advice for shops and other public venues, but integration with Transport for London's journey planner is currently underway. Wayne Trevor, London Underground's accessibility and inclusion manager, said the Web service will help disabled and elderly travellers to be more confident and independent in their tube travels. 'The new service will be a real benefit for all our customers showing them the best routes through stations for their individual needs, not just wheelchair users, but the elderly, travellers with heavy luggage and parents with buggies, as well as those passengers with visual and hearing impairments,' said Trevor in a statement. ...more
