UPDATED: iPod firmware update breaks Real 'hack'

Apple's most recent firmware update for the iPod, released last month, breaks Real Network's Harmony technology, which enable songs bought from Real's online store to be played on the device. The change was not mentioned by Apple at the time and whether it has been effective has not yet been verified. Microsoft delivers record sales and earnings

Buoyed by strong sales in its consumer division, Microsoft announced record profits the the fourth quarter of 2004. The software giant says it achieved revenues of $10.8 billion for the quarter, up seven per cent on the equivalent quarter of 2003. ...more

Another filter for safe surfing

The Internet Content Rating Association has released the ICRAfilter for parents to screen Internet content. Having worked to introduce a voluntary, source-embedded syntax for describing content (by which over 50,000 sites are labelled, apparently), ICRA's new filtering tool 'reads' the labels to help ensure content is filtered according to predefined values.
