More sacked for e-mail abuse

Following on from the recent story concerning two men who lost their appeal of unfair dismissal over e-mail abuse, it has come to light that six more people from a different company have been dismissed. The former employees at the Birmingham sales office of Cable & Wireless were dismissed and six other staff were disciplined for sending offensive e-mail. It is believed that a number of those concerned will be appealing against the dismissal and claim that they have been victimised and that abuse of the computer system is rife in the company. ...more

Vista to create 50,000 EU jobs

Microsoft's new Vista operating system will add 50,000 new jobs to six countries in the EU next year. The study, commissioned by Microsoft, studied the effect of the Vista launch in the UK, France, Germany Denmark, Poland and Spain who represent more than two thirds of the EU's IT spend. Having acquitted itself well at the network perimeter, enterprises are now ready to let Linux in on its crown jewels: mission-critical computing, claims report. Almost half of the world's large businesses will favour Linux for their mission-critical applications by the end of 2011, according to research. Linux certificate puts kernel developers in impossible position

A patent expert has attacked the Open Source Community's latest initiative to document the provenance of code contributed to the Linux kernel so that proving its origins will be quicker and easier in the face of litigation. The Developer's Certificate of Origin 1.0 asserts that the developer submitting the code which it covers has either written or modified that code according to their rights to do so, or it is being submitted, unchanged, on behalf of someone else who asserts these rights. ...more
