UK understates the knowledge economy

The UK government is holding back the development of the knowledge economy in Britain because its economic measurements are still based on old assumptions according to a new report by the IT trade association Intellect. The report, entitled Navigating the New Economy says that the Government should take a fresh look at and, where necessary, update the measurements that form the basis of policy development if Britain is to prosper in the 21st century. BT will use Vodafone's cellular network for mobile calls made using its revolutionary network-aware Bluephone. In an announcement today, Bill Morrow, CEO at Vodafone, described the tie-up as having 'huge attractions for both organisations. An iPod phone is definitely coming, according to sources in Taiwan. The Australian online technology magazineSmarthouse says that it has received confirmation that Apple is currently negotiating with Taiwanese suppliers to build the as yet un-named and unannounced iPhone. Music publishers are restricting online growth - DiMA

The head of the body that represents online music services has said that music publishers' demands are restricting the growth of the industry. Jonathan Potter, director of DiMA, the Digital Media Association, said that unless publishers accept a smaller share of the digital music pie for songwriters, the online services will not be able to cut prices in order to better compete with the 'free' music available on p2p file sharing networks.
