FBI warns of hurricane Katrina scams

Online donators to hurricane Katrina Internet relief funds should be wary, the FBI has warned. Around 60 per cent of the 4,000 websites advertising charitable services for victims of the hurricane come from overseas, which could indicate that they are in fact bogus, reports Reuters. Senior FBI and Justice Department officials in the US have warned kindhearted members of the public to be on their guard and not to be fooled by fraudulent charities - some of which may dupe users in to believing they are huge organisations like the Red Cross. ...more

Yahoo! reports online advertising boom

Yahoo has reported record third-quarter revenues, with a growth in online advertising of 46 per cent from last year. The Internet giant's financial results beat Wall Street analysts' estimates by $14 million dollars, giving the company a revenue of $932 million. Their predictions were based on revenue after the deduction of fees to sites like Microsoft's MSN that display Yahoo's search ads. ...more

HD DVD drives heading into all Toshiba laptops

Toshiba is intending to put HD DVD drives in all of its laptops from next year, a Toshiba executive has said. The move is a new attempt to gain ground in the next-generation DVD format battle. Sony equips its PS3 game consoles with Blu-ray drives to win people to the rival high-definition DVD format, and Toshiba should use a similar tactic, said Toshiba Senior Vice President Hisatsugu Nonaka. ...more
