NTL considers ITV bid

NTL Telewest has signalled its interest in a takeover of ITV to form a ?9 billion pound media group. The cable television, broadband, telephone and mobile phone group revealed that it has contacted the terrestrial broadcaster to advise it of its 'interest in exploring a possible combination transaction', after the Guardian broke news of talks between the two companies. Hollywood seeks digital standard

Whereas on the Internet video can come in any number of formats - such as QuickTime, Windows Media and RealPlayer - major Hollywood studios have decided that it will be in their best interests to agree a common standard for digital movie formats, projection and distribution. Movie studios are keen to switch much of their output to digital, replacing expensive film prints with digital copies that can be delivered on disk or via satellite or the Internet. Over the weekend, the Internet has been awash with rumours that Google is in talks to buy the video-sharing site YouTube.
