Comment: Free services threaten UK's broadband future

So-called 'free' broadband might have sounded like Internet nirvana when it was launched earlier this year by companies such as The Carphone Warehouse and Sky, but industry experts are warning that it could prove to be the nail in the coffin for Britain's high-speed Internet access. Some ISPs have complained to PC Pro that demand for broadband has soared so dramatically that Britain's telecoms infrastructure is close to breaking point. Open-source rivals isolate Novell

Novell is becoming increasingly isolated as its open-source rivals speak out to distance themselves from the pact it made with Microsoft. In an open letter, the company's CEO Ron Hovsepian outlined Novell's insistence that the patent covenant between it and Microsoft was in no way an admission that Linux infringes Microsoft's IP, and pointed out its continuing efforts in the open-source community. Hovsepian said that its help in founding the Open Innovation Network (OIN), a body tasked with acquiring patents for the good for the open-source community was a case in point. ...more

Korea to create all-standard mobile city

Not content with building a Linux city, South Korea has now announced plans to create a 'mobile paradise'. Later this year the country's government will designate an area where almost all wireless technologies will be available, enabling people to stay permanently connected and, more importantly, enabling businesses to field-test their products. 'This is kind of a free technology zone that will play the role of test bed for Korean exporters,' said Hyung Tae-gun, director general at the Ministry of Information and Communication. ...more
