Speculation mounts on Microsoft anti-virus offering

Microsoft has fuelled speculation that it is to offer an anti-virus product in the near future. Mike Nash, chief of Microsoft's security business unit has told journalists that 'we're still planning to offer our own AV (anti-virus) product,' Nash went on to say that Microsoft would sell its anti-virus program as a separate product from Windows in competition to products from Symantec and Network Associates, rather than bundle it for free. A year ago Microsoft bought the Romanian anti-virus company GeCAD Software and its RAV AntiVirus solution. ...more

The FBI is to attend a conference on cybercrime in Birmingham next week. The two-day conference has been arranged by the National Crime Squad (NCS) and will bring together representatives from 20 countries. Symantec drops Norton Utilities for Mac

Symantec has stopped development of Norton Utilities for the Mac, according to a report by The Mac Observer. The report quotes Nancy Mohler, Symantec's senior product manager, who insists that the copmpany remains committed to the platform and that its other Mac products - Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall - will continue. 'The decision was based solely on the strategic desire to focus Macintosh development resources on Internet security solutions,' Mohler said. ...more

Freeserve to drop Google searches

Britain's biggest ISP Freeserve is to drop using Google as its search provider. Instead it is to announce a deal with Overture to use the listings from FAST - the search engine Overture bought for $70 million back in February.
