Running the championships' own Intranet system and Internet Web caching systems on Linux This year's Wimbledon breaks cover next week, and IBM is using Linux to power both the Web- and on-site technologies, bringing all the action to those that can't make it to Centre Court and wireless access to those that can. IBM is installing its Linux-powered Tivoli Intelligent ThinkDynamic Orchestrator that handles and balances the varying demand to the website - between say, visual coverage of Maria Sharapova games and Cliff Richard live audio feed. Freeserve announces consumer ADSL package

Freeserve is set to launch its consumer ADSL package at the start of next month, several weeks before BT will be ready to debut its own service. Intel cuts a third off mobile computing prices

As anticipated, Intel pruned its Pentium M processor prices over the weekend by as much as a third. The Dothan-based processors form the basis of the Centrino platform, and four models are effected. The top-of-the-range 755 (2GHz, with 2MB of cache and a 400MHz systems bus) is cut by 34 per cent - from $637 to $423. ...more

Pumping and dumping is increasing

Fraudsters are turning to the Net as an easy means of stock "pumping and dumping" in increasing numbers. Whereas before the online revolution, perpetrators would have to artificially promote stocks over the telephone, which required a lot of man-power, the same result can be achieved over the Internet by one person sending emails and posting messages in chat rooms and news groups. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reports that cases have already risen 37 per cent over the figure for the whole of last year and Internet-related stock fraud cases now account for a quarter of all federal securities investigations. ...more
